Subscription dinner kits are all over the place these days. I see them advertised everywhere I look online, radio, podcasts, youtube, Pinterest, etc. They are a huge business these days because people’s lives are so busy. Meal planning is difficult for many families because we are always on the go. And, after a long day at work, no one wants to go grocery shopping, then come home to cook.
These Dinner Kit delivery services can be a great solution, but you’re probably here because you don’t know which one to choose. Hopefully, you’ll get some good answers to help you make your decision.
As a reader of Treasured Mom, you can try out Gobble for $36. That will come as 3 meal kits for 2 people, once you’re signed in, they will ask you questions about your preferences so you can customize your plan. I really think it’s worth it for everyone to try it out. You won’t have to continue if you don’t want to. Keep reading to hear all the details of my experience.
My Honest Gobble Meal Kit Subscription Review
I’ve been watching the dinner kit delivery trend for a while and I’ve really been holding back. I just wasn’t sure that I would get affordable family meals in these kits. We’re a frugal family and we try to keep tight reigns on our grocery budget so I thought it wouldn’t be feasible.
Then Gobble popped up on my Groupon feed and it looked like a pretty great deal. I pulled the trigger and bought the Groupon.
I finally got around to ordering up my meals and I was pleasantly surprised that they had so many to offer. Our family avoids gluten and we like extra vegetables whenever possible. After poking through a bit we ended up choosing Pan-Roasted Chicken with Curried Cauliflower Couscous, Pan-Roasted Top Sirloin with Roasted Potatoes & Sauteed Spinach, and Pan-Roasted Chicken with Green Bean Casserole & Mashed Potatoes. I guess I was into pan-roasting that week, haha.
How was the Dinner Kit Ordering?
Once I got signed into Gobble, I was able to see a list of about 9-10 meals to choose from. They list the allergens with each meal option, so it’s extremely easy to see which meals would be right for you. When managing your subscription, you also get to choose which types of meat you want.
How was the Meal Kit Delivery?
I was out when the Gobble Dinner Kit showed up. I got so excited when we rounded the corner and saw that it was sitting right there on our doorstep. I brought it inside and quickly opened it with all the kids gathered around. I think they were just as excited as I was.
It came just when I was expecting it because they tell you right away which days they deliver to your area.
Ingredient Packaging
Once I opened up the box, I saw that there was an insulated wrap, closed up and secured with tape. After unwrapping that, I immediately saw zipper bags full of the meal kit ingredients. All the produce, sauce ingredients, and additional meal components are inside that bag. It has a label on the side, specifying exactly which meal it goes to.
After removing the zipper bags, I could see that the frozen ice blocks and meats were at the bottom. Each of the meats is vacuum-sealed and kept near the ice so it stays very cold.
Since I strive to give you an honest review, I will say that I was a bit disappointed that my meat packaging must have been punctured or had somehow lost its seal because it had leaked into the bottom of the box. Ewww, Gross! Fortunately, because it’s packed onto the bottom, I was not concerned about the rest of my ingredients and didn’t throw anyone out. This might really throw some people for a loop!
I put all the meat packages in a container and into the fridge so they didn’t continue to leak and make a mess.
Ease of Meal Prep
The instructions for the meal prep are very clear. I think even novice cooks would be able to easily make these meals. It may even be a great way to learn to cook. I had my girls help me and they were able to easily complete the steps. Mostly, there was washing and chopping of vegetables, then sauteeing the vegetables and the meat.
I set all my ingredients for chopping out on a large cutting board and prepared the ingredients first. Then I started assembling the meal, following the directions laid out on the Gobble Recipe Card. These cards are nice, letting you know exactly what you’ll need to gather before starting. Since all the ingredients are listed, I’ll be able to recreate these recipes on my own, later.
Are They Really 15-Minute Meals?
Yes and No. I am a pretty proficient cook and each of these meals took me a little more than the 15 minutes that they claim. I think in all truth, the cooking didn’t take more than 15 minutes, but because it was a new recipe to me, I had to keep re-reading the card to make sure I was getting the steps right. Chopping all the vegetables took 5-10 minutes on its own.
I don’t think you can expect to open the fridge, pull out the ingredients, and be eating 15 minutes later. The meals are quick and easy, but be sure to allow enough time to get familiar with the recipe card and go through the steps.
How Did the Gobble Meals Taste?
I’ll get it right out there — They Were Amazing! Each meal I made was delicious. Everything tasted fresh and even the kids were happy. They didn’t like the cauliflower rice, which I knew was coming, but it was so good that my husband and I didn’t mind eating all of it. 🙂 The green bean casserole? They liked it so much that they were using the sauce on their mashed potatoes.
I’ll say that the meat was of good quality, but wasn’t anything special. It was nice that it was in just the right portions and trimmed perfectly.
My family liked all the Gobble Meals so much that they were definitely begging me to order again.
And, didn’t the meals turn out beautifully? I never make our meals this fancy so it was really fun to try to make everything look like the pictures.
Does Gobble Make a Good Frugal Family Meal?
To start with, a standard Gobble Meal Kit is for 2 people so when you order a Family Meal, they just double it. You actually get 2 meal kits for each recipe. We have a family of 6 and at the time of ordering our Gobble Subscription, the kids were 13, 13, 12, 8. I figured that if it didn’t provide enough food for all of us, then we could eat something more. To be honest, we are not big eaters. As a reference, my kids still order from the kid’s menu at restaurants and sometimes don’t finish it. I know … we’re kinda lucky. I am also not a big eater and tend to eat a little less than what would be a standard meal.
So, our recipes for 4 were definitely plenty. We even had enough leftovers for my husband to make a work lunch. I know that families of big eaters will not stretch it this far, but should be completely satisfied that there are 4 very nice sized portions.
As far as being frugal, I would compare this to eating out. When we eat out, we easily pay more than the cost of this meal kit. It would not cost as much for you to gather all these ingredients on your own but you are paying for a bit of convenience here.
- It’s delivered right to your door
- A lot of meal prep is already done
- Ingredient portions are just right
- The recipes are easy to follow, step-by-step
What Does it Cost?
Under the family plan, it is $11.99 per meal, plus a $6.99 delivery fee so it is roughly $150.87 per delivery or approximately $50 per dinner. If you’re ordering the 2-person meals, it would be $11.99 X 6 meals = $71.94 + $6.99 deliver = $78.93 total.
How Is Customer Service?
Because the chicken was leaking in the bottom of my box, I called Gobble right away. I got an immediate answer and explained the situation to the customer service rep. He was apologetic and issued an immediate credit of $23.98 to apply to my next delivery. When I got off the phone, I logged in and saw that the credit was indeed there.
I ordered Gobble a second time since I had this credit, and sadly, the meat in that kit was leaking, also. I called them again and this time they gave me a$30 credit. I hope they’re able to resolve this packing issue. We ate those meals and they were just as amazing as the first ones.
How to Manage Your Subscription
Once you have a subscription, you’ll get email notices that it’s time to select your weekly meals. If you don’t want a meal in the coming week, go into your account and you can easily skip the delivery. You can even skip several weeks at a time. If you don’t skip, you will automatically get delivery the following week.
If you decide to cancel your subscription altogether, you can do that right inside of your account. Scroll down to the bottom and choose Help Center > Managing My Account > How Do I Deactivate or Cancel My Subscription? > click here to cancel.
I love that you can cancel right inside their website instead of having to contact them by phone.
My Honest Gobble Dinner Kit Review — The Verdict
I really enjoyed my Gobble dinner kit and see it as a viable option for many families. If you’re a busy family that doesn’t have time to shop, plan, and prep nice meals, but you still want delicious healthy home-cooked food, then this is just right for you. You will love the rich flavors, the variety of options, and ease of preparation.
With this subscription, you’ll have 3 tasty meals each week and can quit eating frozen meals, macaroni and cheese or drive-thru.
As a frugal family, I don’t see us using our Gobble subscription very often. I do think it would be perfect to get a delivery right after we return from a vacation, or during a week that we will be so busy that there’s no time to cook. I also think it would be great to use for date night when we want a fancy dinner, but don’t want to go out. It does take some advance planning, though.
If you want to try it for yourself, you can get a great deal right now as one of my readers. Get your 6 meals for $36 plus free shipping by going here. You can even try it one time and cancel your subscription, without any obligation to continue. Of course, they’re going to encourage you to stay but you don’t have to.
